About Britta

The Rev. Dr. Britta Meiers Carlson is a practical theologian, educator, and ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Her work centers on the intersection of church and society, with particular attention to ecclesiology, immigration, economic inequality, and decolonizing theology. She currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor in Practical Theology at the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. She holds a PhD from Boston University School of Theology, an MDiv from Luther Seminary, and a BA in History and Spanish from Concordia College.

Dr. Carlson has served a wide range of communities as a pastor, professor, and community. She has been instrumental in establishing new ministries with Latiné immigrant communities and held leadership roles in ecclesial and educational contexts. Her research and writing have been published in Ecumenical TrendsCurrents in Theology and Mission, and several edited volumes exploring topics such as mission, incarceration, and church practices. Whether in the classroom, the congregation, or marginalized communities, she is committed to fostering spaces of theological reflection that are socially engaged, justice-oriented, and rooted in hope.

Britta enjoys engaging congregations, synod assemblies, and church retreats through preaching, speaking engagements, and the facilitation of workshops and trainings. Her sessions have covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • The relationship between the Church and the U.S. immigration system

  • Immigrant sanctuary practices

  • Community organizing strategies for congregations

  • Justice-oriented approaches to evangelism.

 

An experienced instructor in pastoral Spanish, Britta also offers private tutoring for individuals seeking to strengthen their language skills for ministry.
